Top 3 River Tubing Trips in the Austin, Texas Area
The Austin Texas area is famous for its outdoor living, with so many things for people to do. One of the more popular outdoor activities in the Spring and Summer months is tubing trips. Austin is blessed with several local area rivers that are used for riding inner-tubers. Hundreds, if not thousands of Texans and also people who visit Austin enjoy floating down these rivers and enjoying the scenic views.
It is so popular, that some local transportation companies even offer tour packages that feature tubing trips. The top 3 local rivers in the Austin area that are used by tubers for their enjoyment are the San Marcos River, Comal River, and Guadelupe River. We ranked them in descending order from #3 to #1.
#3 Guadalupe River
The Guadalupe River is a unique experience in that you have several options available. You can take a very short two-hour trip and stop when you reach the Horseshoe Bend or you can go on further down the river which adds 3 to 4 additional hours to your ride. Both ways are enjoyable and you are allowed to drink alcohol while on the river itself, but not in the park areas. The river offers very scenic views of the limestone cliffs and lush, green vegetation all around you.
#2 Comal River
The Comal River runs through the city of New Braunfels, Texas. This inner-city river offers very scenic views of both the city and vegetation along its short route. It is by far the shortest of the three rivers on our list, but that does not take away from the enjoyment. The river offers a wide leisurely ride and is very family-friendly. However, there is one tricky section of the tour that takes you around a dam on the river. You must traverse a one tube at a time chute to get around the dam. For the adults, alcohol is allowed on the river itself, but cannot be consumed in the park areas.
#1 San Marcos River
The San Marcos River offers tubers some of the most scenic and enjoyable floats in Texas. It offers a more kid-friendly floating experience and one that is a much more adult-friendly ride as well. The kid-friendly ride features an hour-long ride and the adult ride is more leisurely and much longer at three hours. You can also enjoy adult beverages while tubing down the river for those 21 or over. The San Marcos River is a spring-fed river that helps to keep the water fairly cool throughout the Spring and Summer, which is one of the primary reasons why it is the top tubing river in the Austin area.
